The Soil Factory Food Forest is a space that grows food and mimics the multi-layered (strata) of forests. That is, the food forest has very tall trees, medium-sized trees, shrubs, vines, ground cover and everything in between! We see this as different from most orchards in that we are not producing tree crops commercially and we do not follow a monoculture design of rowed trees. The diversity in species, varieties, and strata provide habitat and food for many species, including humans!
Humans have been caring for food forests since time immemorial. Indeed, most biodiversity on Earth is cared for by Indigenous peoples. We acknowledge that the Gayogohó:nǫʼ are the original carers for the land that this food forest is on, and we are grateful that their culture is alive today.
